In 2012, in collaboration with the US Embassy Project, the May Chidiac Foundation – Media Institute celebrated Lebanese youth’s completion of a new media training program that took place for 9 months.
The first course entitled “Digital Media and Web Journalism” was instructed by Naoum Abi Adam served as an introduction to the study and creation of multimedia, using various software programs. Students were taught both the aesthetic and technical aspects of multimedia design and production. Participants were introduced to Web production and the business process behind multimedia. The instructor discussed the traditional practices of journalism, such as reporting, editing, photojournalism and design, while showing how the distinguishing features of the Web-capacity, immediacy, flexibility, permanency, and interactivity – offer new storytelling possibilities.
Another integral part of the course dealt with writing news and headlines in electronic media. It focused on the correlations between audio, written, and visual media and the concept of mobile news. Trainees were divided into groups, as per the course requirements, determined by the trainer Nawfal Daou, Editor-in-Chief of the online daily Naharnet.
The final third of the course included a training with Mr. Roland Abi Najem. Trainees engaged in writing short posts concerning social and political developments while taking into consideration the different formats available and methods of publishing. They became acquainted with concepts such as penetration trends of social networking services and their specific impact in the Arab region. Trainees also studies factors that affect the adoption of the platforms with a view to income, youth, population, digital access, internet freedom, language barriers, etc..
